Edmond Scientific Company Demonstrates RHIO/HIE Data Security and Privacy Solution for the NHIN at Annual HIMSS Conference, Chicago ‘09
Fairfax,
VA
March 30th, 2009
- Edmond Scientific Company (ESC) is demonstrating a critical technology required for data privacy and security in scenarios which link healthcare enterprises into the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference, April 5-8, 2009. The technology demonstration reveals a solution to the problem healthcare enterprises face in providing interoperable, authorized access to patient data while meeting legislated patient data privacy directives.
In order to exchange patient data through the NHIN, enterprises need to comply with specialized security and privacy regulations both within the enterprise, and between enterprises. True interoperability between health enterprises also means complying with Cross-Enterprise Security and Privacy Authorization (XSPA) access control standards that provide role-based access control (RBAC), purpose-based access control (PBAC), flexible-extensible policy management, and allow patient determined privacy preferences/consent directives to be implemented. Enterprises interested in exchanging data cross-community must also have a security and privacy authorization infrastructure that conforms to these higher architectures. The technology demonstration shows how such a solution has been designed, developed and is currently being tested for large health enterprises.
“The solution we developed builds upon our domain expertise in providing both enterprise architectural and software engineering services for integrated health enterprises. Having co-authored two of the NHIN interface specifications, supporting the Federal Government in the NHIN Technical and Security Workgroup, architecting the Federal Bidirectional Health Information Exchange (BHIE) system as well as clinical health data repositories, and supporting the Federal Health Architecture (FHA) group under Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), we had a very specific understanding of how the data needed to be shared and protected. When coupled with our software engineering capability developing and implementing Electronic Health Record (EHR) and federated patient security and privacy solutions, we have been able to design and implement cutting-edge technology at a time when the President’s stimulus package will require health enterprises to implement a real, interoperable solution that enforces HIPAA.”
